IMC 2010 Assignments

Below are a selection of assignments, cover, interior and Magic: The Gathering Cards. PLease choose ONE to do for the IMC week.

SIZE SPECS:

Images created for book cover or interior art should fit an accepted book cover trim size( measure one of your books!). Please work larger than print size, but no larger than 18x24( or the proportional equivalent based on the book size you choose)

Magic Card Art must be in proportion to the print size,

example:

11.517X15.747-inches-horizontal, will reduce to the correct print size for card art.

- see notes/stylde guide PDF on M:TG at below assignments.

Sketches should look professional. They should be done with ruled borders in the correct proportion -even if the sketch is smaller than your original will be.

Focus on making a ROCKING image.Compose your image with the assumption that the Art Director has told you the type will run outside of the art and you do not have to leave the top of the composition open.

have fun folks!

Rebecca

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Beauty and the Beast(book interior or cover)

Feel free to interpret this to fit the kind of portfolio you are building, just be clear of your intentions within the picture. It can be done literally as a children's fairy tale book --  or used thematically, pushed into a fantasy or science fiction image.

----------------------------------------------------------

Jet cycle getaway:(cover)

Man and woman on a flying jet cycle. Urban landscape below. Try to tell a story through use of costuming details. Again, interpret this to fit the kind of portfolio you are building — young adult or adult, set in steampunk, post apocalyptic, far future, etc surroundings.

----------------------------------------------------------

Joan of Arc(cover)

Can be historical or pushed into fantasy or science fiction setting.

----------------------------------------------------------

Paranormal Romance(cover)

Hot girl in contemporary, bad-ass, clothes. Dark urban background. Angel wings implied in the background – either through some interesting architectural details or as magical light.

----------------------------------------------------------

War Priest of Thune (Magic Card)

(Please download M:TG style guide below)

Color: White creature

Location: Battlefield

Action: This is a cleric who isn't content to sit back and heal the wounded — he/she wades into combat, using his/her own protective magic to make him/her a more powerful sacred warrior. Show a male or female, olive-skinned human cleric in full battle armor. Maybe the armor is plate with leather covering strapped over it. We want a glamor shot of him/her, confronting the camera, heavy mace in hand, as a smog rolls away from him/her unnaturally, as if receding from his/her presence.

Focus: The battle cleric

Mood: A holy badass

Notes: No real-world symbols, please.

Frost Titan(Magic Card)

(Please download M:TG style guide below)

Color: Blue creature

Location: Glacial/arctic area, perhaps in a blizzard

Action: This titan is part of a cycle of five giants, each of which embodies a powerful aspect or element. This one represents the power of ice and frost. He's huge (about 25 ft/8m tall), with ice-blue muscular physique, and armed with an axe of ice -- a breathtaking and terrible sight for tiny mortals. from his mouth emanates a constant sheet of heavy frost, like a breath of steam from heavy dry ice. He looks down on us, coldly condescending.

Focus: The titan

Mood: Mystical, awe-inspiring, severe

Notes: some giants in fantasy are like stupid, drooling, oversized brutes. This Titan is the OTHER kind of giant: the seldom-seen, almost godlike giants of legend. They're shrewd, majestic, and incredibly powerful.

***Magic Tone in general: Magic is a fantasy property that shuns many of general fantasy’s visual tropes. No bearded wizards in pointy hats. No knights with bucket helmets. No damsels in distress. Armor and weapon design should be edgier than anything historically accurate. We also like to see non-Caucasian or ethnically mixed features for humans. See our ‘vanilla’ styleguide for examples of what I consider good design in the absence of a styleguide or specific world setting.

****Card Art in general: card art needs to be approached very differently than a book cover. At the end of the day the image will be printed in a 2 1/16” (52mm) wide x 1 1/2” (38mm) tall box. It’s nice that the severe reduction can tighten the work in interesting ways, but also possible to just turn the image into noise. The best card art will always have a composition that features large shapes and a deliberate approach to the figure-ground relationship (be it warm-vs-cool, edge or bounce lighting, concentration of detail, etc etc).
