Common Questions about the Master Class:

"I am most interested in this workshop, but am unsure of my skill level or

any prerequisites."

Thank you for your interest in the Illustration Master Class.

Regardless of your abilities, exposing yourself to new and professional ways to problem solving and image making will help you objectively assess your own methods and provide positive development in understanding what you wish to say in your own art.

It is not necessarily about your current level or ability in art, but about where you want to go with it and what you want to learn.

This workshop represents a wonderful cross section of the best professional talent in the science fiction and fantasy genre. If you are serious about pursuing a profession in illustration, an intensive class like this is a rare opportunity to receive fresh and varying views on art, discuss current trends in the illustration field, and receive one-on-one

time from some of the industry’s masters.

If art is currently more of a hobby for you, then this class would still be a great experience to learn and grow no matter your level, but again it is entirely a personal choice.

"Can I take photos or video tape during the lectures?"

Without express permission from the lecturers, all photography, video, and audio recordings are prohibited during the lectures as many materials have confidentiality and copyright sensitivity.

Additionally, part of the special quality of this program is in the personal exchange of professional information that is not widely available on the internet. Photos, video, and audio are encouraged however in the studios and elsewhere on campus in documenting your experience of the week. If you are ever in doubt whether something can be photographed or recorded, simply ask and we are more than happy to clarify.

Keep in mind these are standard issue single occupancy dorm beds, firm mattresses nothing fancy. Bring a mattress pad if you are a delicate sleeper.

The dorms are not air-conditioned. Bringing a fan is recommended. If you cannot fit a fan into your luggage, purchasing one in amherst should be straight forward.

Printing Services:

Bring a compact flash and load the images that you want to print onto it- Collective Copies (walking distance from the studio) and they will print everything for you. We do not have access to the campus computer lab, but Collective copies has all the same services.

Collective copies will print out oversized images on their architectural printer for mounting on masontite (Donato's technique), their machine can handle good quality paper, but it needs to be no heavier than basic printer paper card stock or 100lb watercolor paper.

The IMC will not have an oversize printer on site, but if you are feeling ambitious, please feel free to bring your own to keep in your room.

Bringing Your Own Supplies: Traditional/Digital

Art supplies are not included in the IMC program.
The mediums you work in (either digital or traditional) fall under the category of "art supplies."
You will need to bring a laptop, already loaded with the appropriate painting programs (corel painter or photoshop) and wacom if you would like to work digitally while you are here.

The computer lab is not available to us.
*If you work in paint/traditionally, you will need to bring your own paints and paper etc..as well- those will not be provided on site.*
